Levrikon Coming on the heels of Jute Gyte's jaw dropping black metal trilogy, Penetralia is literal hours of disturbing ambient music. Only two songs of the 17 are under 10 minutes, and two other songs are hovering around 30. Fans of Natural Snow Buildings will find a lot to dig in this collection, though I wouldn't recommend trying to listen to the whole thing in one go.

“Another Pioneer” is constructed from voice and guitar recordings from 2006. “Slow Fire” is constructed from voice and guitar recordings from 2002. Both tracks are canons, with multiple copies of the same sound material gradually decreasing in tempo using different time-stretching algorithms that create combination tones and other artifacts as they desynchronize. “The Cave Is Empty” was written in 2007. “May Night”, “Eurisko”, and “Kallopismata Orfnes” are arrangements of Une jeune fillette.”Forced Entropy” was written by feeding multiple polymetric parts into monophonic synths to generate non-repeating melodies. “Cavesway” uses time-stretched recordings of the Kyrie from Ockeghem’s Missa Cuiusvis Toni played in all four modes simultaneously. “Haumea”, “We Are Making a New World”, “Snow Turned to Rain”, “Red Gaze”, “Orcus”, and “Cavesway” are collages of post-Dialectics material and sounds created ~2002-2007, recovered from an old hard drive.

PSA: if there was an album you heard a couple years ago and thought it was ok, listen to it again and you might love it. That's what happened to me with this album. I cannot fathom why it didn't stick with me back then. Same thing happened with Decoherence's Unitarity for that matter. Matten

The dissonant bleakness of the first track is less weird and more hypnotic than on the second track. That's why I like it a little more. But both songs together make for an extraordinary experience and a journey to the arhythmically beating heart of darkness. mourner
